The campaign will be supported by the public-private partnership Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the World Health Organization and UNICEF, said a senior official of the Department of Public Health.

"We responded to Gavi's questions about our proposal for a national cervical cancer vaccination campaign. We hope that Gavi will approve the campaign by the middle of the year, "said Dr. Daw Htar Htar Lin, head of the Expanded Immunization Program of the Ministry of Public Health.

The ministry submitted the proposal for cervical cancer vaccination campaign to Gavi in 2018. The government will badume 10% of the cost of the national campaign, while Gavi will cover the rest.

The campaign hopes to provide vaccines to over 450,000 girls aged 9 and 10 to protect them from cervical cancer. It is recommended that girls receive the HPV vaccine twice in their life. Those who have been vaccinated should receive another dose 18 months later, said program experts.

"The costs of the HPV vaccine for two doses per girl are expected to be around 9 USD (13,700 K) in Myanmar," said Dr. Htar Htar Lin.

According to Gavi's statistics, a woman dies from cervical cancer every two minutes, or 266,000 per year, of which about 80 per cent in developing countries. The HPV vaccine can prevent up to 90% of cervical cancer cases.

Gavi has provided Myanmar $ 110 million for measles, mumps, rubella and other disease immunization campaigns.
