The University of Ghana is the first university in the country
The Government of Ghana intends to establish a new university in the country as part of ongoing reforms in higher education.
A draft policy document on higher education reforms considers, as a priority priority area, the "creation of the Open University Ghana".
An open university is a university that has an open academic policy, with minimal or no entry requirements that typically use specific teaching methods, such as open, badisted learning or distance learning. .
At a special forum on higher education reform organized at the University of Ghana, on Friday, June 14, on the draft guidance document intended to shape the '' ''. higher education, Professor Mohammed Salifu, executive secretary of the National Council of Higher Education (NCTE), hinted in motion.
Even though it has not revealed much about this new university, the policy paper clearly positions it as one of the priority areas of the Ministry of Education.
Other areas covered by the new policy include a bill to harmonize the various laws on public universities; a bill that has been widely interpreted as a measure taken by the government to control universities. The Minister of Education in charge of Higher Education said the bill was only intended to unify the various laws of public universities, but not to manage them.
As part of these reforms, a centralized system of application and placement services will also be put in place to consolidate all admissions to universities to make the process fair.
Some stakeholders have, however, expressed concern that universities may lose their internally generated funds when establishing a centralized system, but the Minister of Education, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has dispelled these fears.
He added that this decision would not take the funds generated internally and would not disrupt the admission criteria of the universities.
