Defense and Interior Minority spokesman James Agalga said on Tuesday that the new directive was misplaced and would weaken the capabilities of the country's reputed armed forces.

"We are talking here about a fighting force; a fighting force is a force that must be agile, a fighting force must be a young force. But a policy of extending the period of service of other grades from 25 to 30 years is, in my view, a misplaced priority and should not be pursued, "he said.

He added: "An aging force can only have the spirit and effectiveness to defend our territorial integrity."

Quoting the United Kingdom and the United States in support of his argument, Agalga pointed out that the extension of the service would weigh down Ghana's finances, because more money would be spent on the health needs of the old ones. troops.

Defense Minister Dominic Nitiwul, however, disagreed, saying that Agalga, a former deputy interior minister, had not appreciated politics enough.

"He [Agalga] was part of the committee that looked at it [LI] and it's become law. So I do not know what he's talking about. He is probably cheating on the Ghanaian people. He should go back and watch it, "said Nitiwul.
