The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, revealed that the government of Ghana was planning to put in place a security mechanism for the protection of journalists, to be executed in mid-2019.

"The protection of media professionals should also see a new impetus with the establishment of a coordination mechanism on the safety of journalists before July," said the minister in a statement on Friday, May 3, 2019 to mark the World Press Freedom Day.

This year's World Press Freedom Day theme is "Media for Democracy, Journalism and Disinformation Elections".

Mr. Nkrumah further noted that the government is also implementing a Media Capacity Building Program (MCEP) to enhance the effectiveness of journalists.

He said the government is committed to "supporting measures that broaden the boundaries of freedom of expression in the progress of our democracy".
