An act of vandalism in Tema at the transmission site of the Ghana Grid Company's Volta smelter (GRIDCo) around 1:30 am Monday caused a loss of 180 megawatts of power generation systems.
The situation has plunged parts of Dansoman, Kasoa, Swan Lake and Accra into darkness.
Gridco officials told Graphic Online that thieves suspected of vandalizing the tower had removed the bolts and nuts that supported it before using a hacksaw blade to cut the base of the tower , which caused it to collapse on a second tower that is coupled to it in parallel.
Gridco's director of systems operations told Graphic Online that officials had isolated the power from the damaged lines so as not to harm the distribution.
