Former Ivorian rebel Guillaume Soro said Friday that he was retiring at the head of the National Assembly amid rumors that he might have his own presidential ambitions in the 2020 elections.
"I hand in my resignation," Soro said at a special session of parliament.
The announcement was made a little over a week after President Albadane Ouattara had followed Soro's departure to the presidency of the National Assembly, saying that he would resign in February ".
Soro reportedly had an icy relationship with Ouattara, which forced him to resign after refusing to give up support for the changes to the ruling coalition.
Ouattara is leading a new party, the Rally of Houphouetists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP), which draws part of its name from founding president Felix Houphouet-Boigny and includes the President's Rally of Republicans with D & R. Other forces.
Soro apparently would not have made that change and should now run for the 2020 presidential election.
"Refusing to resign would provoke an institutional crisis," said Soro, prime minister between 2007 and 2012.
"We can not risk fragile peace … to keep a job."
