Chennai, May 25 (1) The top seed, Gayatri Gopichand, left the Yonex-Sunrise All India Junior badminton tournament, losing Saturday in 16th place, Aashi Rawat of Delhi.

Tamil Nadu also suffered a big setback with Satish Kumar, seed number 4, collapsing against Manipur's No. 2 seed, Maisnam Meiraba.

Gayatri, daughter of Indian coach Pullela Gopichand, was prone to mistakes against a worthy challenger of Aashi.

She took the advantage but saw Aashi recover the ground at 6-6. The momentum then accelerated to 10-9, then to 13-11.

Gayatri continued to make mistakes that Aashi exploited thoroughly, taking a solid 18-14 lead that proved sufficient for a 21-15 win.

In the second match, Aashi was on a roll, taking a 5-1 lead before going 9-2 and 15-7 ahead. She did not concede a single point after that for a well-deserved place in the final.

Aashi is now expecting the winner of the second semifinal between Akshaya Arumugam of Tamil Nadu and Samiya Imad Farooqui (Telangana), both without records.

The local player, Satish Kumar, is also found in depth against the second seed, Meiraba, losing 13-21, 11-21 in 50 minutes. He was late at the start of both games and did not find a strategy to regain a foothold in the competition.

He gave up a 2-6 lead in the first game, which quickly went from 4-8 to 9-16. The second game also followed the same pattern. Satish dropped 2-5 and could not recover any ground to lose 11-21 in 50 minutes.

Satish, however, hinted at his talent and temperament in the morning, taking the best of Sarath D, seed number 9, from Andhra Pradesh. He was trailing after the first game (10-21), but he had recovered enough to give the impression of an easy win, winning the next two games 21-16, 21-12.

Earlier in the morning, Akshaya, who had not been sown, fought for a well-deserved place in the semifinals. Facing a solid No. 8 seed, Mansi Singh of UP, she lost the opening match 13-21. But she ignored the setback and smartly defeated to win the next 21-14. ATK ATK
