In the latest issue of the Snake Eyes: Deadgame miniseries, team member GI Joe once again changed his iconic uniform.

There are few GI Joe’s who look as iconic as Snake Eyes. Dressed head-to-toe in solid black, Snake Eyes features a towering figure that is easily recognizable to both his fellow Joe’s and members of Cobra. But in Snake Eyes: Deadgame # 4 The silent ninja dons a new outfit that removes his signature look.
Searching for a weapon to help him defeat ancient ninja wizard Kirigun, Snake Eyes travels to Eismitte, Greenland. The countryside is desolate and barren, with miles of ice and snow surrounding it on either side. Being both a Joe and a ninja, Snake Eye’s knows he’ll need a special costume to help him blend in with his surroundings and survive the freezing temperatures.

In a huge break from his traditional black costume, Snake Eyes dons an all-white costume on his adventures in the snow. It’s a very obvious decision for him to take both stealth and survival at the same time, but it’s literally the opposite of what he always wears. Snake Eye’s main rival, the ninja Cobra Storm Shadow, wears white all over his body, so it historically makes sense why Snake Eyes has never worn this color himself before.
Sadly, Snake Eye’s adherence to stealth doesn’t pay off well as he is under attack from undead warriors rising from the ice and frost. After defeating the Frozen Warriors, Snake Eyes is thrown back into battle almost immediately as a giant polar bear attacks him. Snake Eyes manages to defeat the bear, but not before his large claws tear his white suit to shreds leaving him in his usual black suit. It’s a shame, because the new white look suits Snake Eyes well. While being just an exchange of colors without changing the physical design of his costume, white is a nice change of pace for Snake Eyes which contrasts sharply with his classic look. The fact that white is the iconic color of Storm Shadow means that Snake Eyes probably won’t be returning in this outfit after this mission.
This is not the first time Snake Eyes has changed his outfit, however. In Snake Eyes: Deadgame # 2 Snake Eyes dons a red suit as a replacement for his black. The circumstances were very different for Snake Eyes then; the red suit was not a choice he made for himself, but rather a choice Kirigun made when he was unconscious. Much like his white suit, the red suit didn’t last long as it was also destroyed quite quickly in battle.
It is common for some heroes to change their outfits over the years. Sometimes it’s for defense and technological improvements; sometimes it’s about following the most fashionable trends. But for Snake Eyes, his iconic black suit fulfills its function perfectly in terms of both style and functionality. It is perfect for stealth, it offers full body protection and hides his face. Snake Eyes doesn’t need any additional gadgets or add-ons for himself or his costume, so he doesn’t need major changes to his basic design. While both of her color swaps were interesting, both changes to her costume ended in a similar fashion, with the return of the classic black outfit.
