IIT-Madras' innovative students won the admiration of tech entrepreneur Elon Musk for designing a hyperloop container at a SpaceX contest in Los Angeles.
Avishkar Hyperloop, which was incubated at the IIT-M Innovation Center, was the only Asian team selected to participate in the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition 2019 contest last month. Hyperloop is a proposed transport concept for a network of vacuum sealed tubes that can theoretically transport people at high speed without friction in the air. The competition was held in Los Angeles last weekend and Avishkar team members had the opportunity to interact with Musk, founder and CEO of Space X, and Josh Geigel, co-founder of Virgin Hyperloop One.
Pranit Mehta, one of the members of the team, shared his experience on Twitter. "Nice to meet and interact with @elonmusk at @SpaceX @Hyperloop Pod Competition 2019! In addition, a wonderful experience for the team @avishkar_loop, the only Asian finalist present! (sic), "he tweeted.
Avishkar was commissioned to design an Aboriginal concept for the construction of the first self-propelled, self-propelled Hyperloop Pod in India. They were among the 21 teams selected from 1,600 candidates worldwide to participate in the contest.
Prior to the competition, the Avishkar team was invited to head to Virgin Hyperloop One's headquarters in Los Angeles. "The hyperloop team of @iitmadras @avishkar_loop students has stopped at our Los Angeles office to learn about our progress in India. Always encouraging to see the next generation of thinkers adopt this transformative technology! (sic) "reads a tweet from Virgin Hyperloop One.
The competition was however won by the team of the Technische Universität München (Technical University of Munich), whose nacelle set a speed record of 463 kilometers at the hour.
