The trial jury for fraud against four former Barclays bankers – whose former chief executive, John Varley – was sacked.

The case concerned events that occurred in 2008 when the bank raised billions of dollars from investors in the Middle East.

The other charges were investment banker Roger Jenkins, wealth manager Thomas Kalaris and Richard Boath, the former head of Barclays' group of European financial institutions.

The four denied the charges.
