One of the two people arrested for the abduction of a 14-year-old boy in Kumasi, in the Ashanti regional capital, confessed to the crime and apologized.

Charles Appiah, 38, unemployed, said he regretted having played a role in this act which, according to him, shamed his family.

Mr. Appiah and his 29-year-old accomplice, Mr. Manbadeh Fumey, a security guard who allegedly seized the victim at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, were brought to justice on Thursday.

The two suspects were brought to court after their arrest on Monday, when relatives of the junior high 2 student reported to the police that the boy had been missing for several days.

Police said the suspects had lured the boy to his home in Kwamo, near Ejisu, and taken him to Apatrapa, Kumasi.

The calls for help from the victim attracted pbadersby who informed the police and saved him from an isolated two-story building.

Messrs. Appiah and Fumey are charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and kidnapping, both of which are second degree crimes.

The prosecution pleaded with the court to be taken into custody by the police for further investigation and the case be referred to circuit court for incompetence.

Magistrate Michael Ocloo placed the two men in custody so that they would appear again on April 4.

Even before his application was successful, Mr. Appiah, who had confessed to leading the kidnapping, told the court that he regretted the gesture for which he wished to be forgiven.

"I deeply regret my action. I am really sorry for my wife, my children and all my family. I want the Ghanaians to forgive me for my sins.

"When the police came to pick me up, I felt remorse … everyone who knows me should forgive me," he cried.

Meanwhile, two accomplices, identified only as Felix and Augustine, are on the run and the police have declared them wanted.
