In court, the kidnappers of the two Canadian women rescued on Wednesday demanded a $ 800,000 ransom for their release.
Six of the eight people arrested as part of the kidnapping were placed in custody by the High Court of Accra at their first appearance Friday since their arrest.
The court, presided over by Judge George Buadi, placed them in custody for two weeks following a plea by the prosecution that the investigations into the case were still ongoing.
The hearing will continue on July 1, 2019.
The accused are Sampson Aghalor, aka Romeo, Elvis Ojiyorwe, Jeff Omarsar, all Nigerians.
The others are Yusif Yakubu, Abdul Nasir and Seidu Abubakari, aka Nba – Ghanaians.
All were charged with two counts of conspiracy for the abduction, while Aghalor, Ojiyorwe, Omarsar and Yakubu were separately charged with kidnapping.
Request for ransom
Presenting the facts of the case, a senior prosecutor, Ms. Hilda Craig, stated that Aghalor had established ties with Yakubu in March 2019.
Aghalor discussed kidnapping as an exchange with his new friend
Aghalor then went to Nigeria and recruited Ojiyorwe and Omarsar to join the gang.
On June 4, 2019, the gang took part in a kidnapping operation in Kumasi and successfully kidnapped the two Canadians after having approached them in their home in Nhyiaeso, a suburb of Kumasi.
The gang sent the two girls to an unfinished building in Kenyasi Krobo.
The prosecutor added that Aghalor, who was the leader of the gang, had called the families of the two girls and demanded $ 800,000 in ransom.
In order to prove that they were serious, the gang coated blood on the girls and on the floor.
On June 11, a national security team, led by Colonel Micheal Opoku, arrested Yusif who then took them to the rest of the group.
During their arrest, the defendants mentioned Nasir and Abubakari as part of the gang.
