Captain Marvel is targeted by the trolls as they "bomb" the film due out in March.
The film, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, is the next episode of the Marvel film universe and will feature Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), aka Carol Danvers.
She is the first woman to hold the leading role in the MCU – and she is also the most powerful.
The synopsis explains that the film takes place in the 90s – before Iron Man, which began in 2008.
The film also stars Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) as young agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
There is also the Kree-Skrull War, introducing Jude Law as Yon Rogg and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), the Starforce Skrull leader.
Marvel's film directed by a strong female role comes after fans have called for greater female presence in MCU films.
But not everyone is happy.
Rotten Tomatoes' public comments are being filled with hateful comments about the movie and Brie Larson.
Most comments refer to Larson as a vocal feminist and complaints that the film drives feminism.
A review says, "Larson has made it clear … that men do not need to watch this movie."
The comments refer to Larson's recent interviews during a press tour, where she talked about the impact she could have with such a big movie.
"It's also an opportunity for me because the film is so big," she said. "I knew I could share some concepts on a much larger scale than I could have done before in independent films and even in press tours.
"I've never had a press tour like this where we managed to reach parity en route. I feel so lucky to have made my first big hit movie and talk about feminism all day long.
There are more critical comments saying that the movie is going to ruin the franchise and more threatening to boycott it.
This "bombing" is nothing new though.
Criticism bombardment occurs when online trolls target and criticize a movie they do not like the message to, especially if it does not fit their own narrative.
The last Jedi had a similar problem as fans were unhappy with the direction taken by Skywalker's story and Luke's fate (Mark Hamill).
Trolling got so much worse that Kelly Marie Tan and Daisy Ridley left social media to escape.
Black Panther had the same problem last year too, with a group page closed after recruiting members to sabotage the public's score.
This time, it seems that the trolls targeting Captain Marvel form a smaller group – even if it is vocal – and this shows no sign of stopping the film's success.
The film is ready for a good opening weekend, with forecasts at $ 100 million.
Captain Marvel will be in the cinema on March 8, 2019.
The Avengers: Endgame was released on April 26, 2019.
