One of Manchester United's coaches was taken to hospital yesterday at the start of a pre-season tour of Australia.
Former player Mark Dempsey, 55, a well-respected member of coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's staff, fell ill at the team hotel.
United's coach was taken by ambulance to Perth's five-star Crown Towers, escorted by security and apparently with a veil on his face while he was being taken to the hospital.
It was later said that Mark was dehydrated but was in a stable state.
A source said, "Everyone is in shock. He is a very popular member of the back shop. Obviously, he is more than 10,000 km from his relatives, which further aggravates the situation. "
Last night, his wife, Susan, said that her husband had collapsed from exhaustion and lack of sleep due to the intensity of training and jet lag.
Speaking of the home they share with their 11-year-old daughter at Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancs, she added, "Everything is fine. I just talked to him now.
"He's still in the hospital, but he may be released the next morning. They keep it under observation. He is on a drip because he is dehydrated. "
The former midfielder born in Manchester played twice for United in the 1980s before spending the rest of his career in other clubs, including Sheffield United.
He then coached the Reds and led Scandinavian teams before returning to the Norwegian group Solskjaer last year.
