The memorial service was held at the Legon Botanical Gardens on Thursday
The commemorative ceremony of one week in honor of the former National President of the National Democratic Congress, Dr. Kwabena Adjei, took place Friday in Accra.
The memorial service that took place Thursday at the Legon Botanical Garden was characterized by a dark atmosphere with dozens of dignitaries, sympathizers and the general public filling up the event site to full capacity.
Jerry John Rawlings, NDC founder, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, NDC National President, and NDC Secretary General Johnson Asiedu Nketia were among the dignitaries present.
National President of the new Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, NPP Secretary General John Boadu and other party leaders were also present at the ceremony.
Dr. Adjei died on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital as a result of a long illness.
The weeklong ceremony was originally scheduled for Tuesday, March 19, 2019.
However, after consultations between the bereaved family and the NDC funeral committee, the ceremony was postponed to Thursday to give its organizers plenty of time to plan.
Funeral arrangements
The brother of the late Dr. Kwabena Adjei, Mr. Frank Kwaku Adjei, said in an interview with the Daily Graphic that the deceased's funeral arrangements would take place on Friday, May 31, 2019.
According to the arrangements, he said, the body would rest in state on the forecourt of the State House Friday morning so that people in mourning can pay their last respects to the deceased.
On the same day, the body, he added, will be transported to his hometown, Nkonya, in Biakoye District, in the Oti region, where a vigil will ring to announce the latest funeral rites.
The last funeral ceremonies in his hometown, said Mr. Adjei, will take place on Saturday, June 1, 2019, after which the body will be buried in a cemetery that has not yet been decided.
"On Sunday, June 2, 2019, there will be a thanksgiving service at the Nkonya E.P. Church where the whole process will be completed," he said.
