According to a new study, Norwich was at the top of the list of British cities most favorable to vegans.
A number of factors have been taken into account in determining the most vegan friendly city in the country. Nisbets, a UK retailer of catering equipment and supplies, looked at the number of vegan and vegan restaurant searches in major cities and compared the number of herbal restaurants in the area.
Norwich tops the standings with 2,094 people per vegan or vegetarian restaurant, according to Metro. Edinburgh and Glasgow ranked second and third, followed by Newcastle and Bristol and Nottingham placing tenth. The growing vegan scene in London did not help its ranking as the city ranked 11th.
Vegan in Norwich
Vegan food is becoming more common in Norwich.
According to HappyCow – a resource for vegan and vegetarian restaurants – Norwich's options include vegan Indian dishes, Middle Eastern dishes and comfort food such as pizzas. The Tipy Vegan gives a modern herbal twist to pub food with hamburgers, burritos and pasta. Loving Hut, Norwich's best-rated restaurant on HappyCow, offers an Asian-inspired buffet.
Erpingham House, a three-story herbal restaurant housed in a historic building, opened last year. "The menu is entirely without animal products and especially gluten free", said founder Loui Blake. "It offers a healthier and more conscious way of eating and drinking."
Veganism in the UK
The study revealed additional facts about changing the eating habits of the British. Flexitarian diets – where people are trying to eat fewer animal products – are becoming more and more popular, with 2.7 million people claiming that they eat that way. The number of vegans and vegetarians is higher, representing 6.5 million people. About 5.8 million British people visit vegan or vegetarian restaurants at least once a week. Among the most popular dishes are vegetable curry, vegan mac and cheese and tofu jam.
Restaurants and supermarkets are experiencing a boom in factories, according to a study by the global data mining company Mintel. The UK was the world leader in vegan food launches last year. Many people who have adopted the flexitarian approach to food have said that recent news about the impact of animal farming on the environment has convinced them to adopt new eating habits. Additional research shows that there has been a 237% increase in vegan dining options last year.
