(CNN) – More people are suffering from an epidemic of E. Coli from an unknown source, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. said Tuesday. The total number of people infected is now 96. That's 24 more than the agency had originally announced on Friday.
Symptoms of E. coli, which usually begin about three to four days after the bacteria has been consumed, may include watery or bloody diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting.
Eleven people involved in the mysterious outbreak were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Patients began to get sick on March 2nd. The symptoms reported as late as March 26th began to occur in people with the most recent disease. Additional diseases related to this outbreak may still be reported, said the CDC.
States reporting cases of E. coli related to this outbreak are Georgia (17 patients), Kentucky (46), Ohio (5), Tennessee (26), and Virginia (2). .
Federal health officials have not identified food products, grocery stores or restaurant chains as being at the root of these infections. The CDC, the state health departments, the Food Safety Inspection Service and the US Department of Agriculture and the US Food and Drug Administration are investigating the outbreak.
