A court in Accra has ordered the ongoing strike by the Association of University Teachers of Ghana (UTAG) following a request by the National Labor Commission (NLC).
The Association is claiming a little over $ 2,000 as an entry fee for the speakers.
But after unsuccessful negotiations with the government over their demands, the Commission says its injunction is needed so that the speakers can return to work while negotiations continue.
UTAG has been on strike since Monday August 2 and is demanding the reinstatement of a 2012 single column salary structure deal that would have allowed entry-level lecturers to earn the cedi equivalent of $ 2,084 per month.
The government had said it was confident the Association’s concerns would be resolved, so that its members would return to office if a roadmap is adopted within 24 hours of the strike being called.
Deputy employment minister Bright Wereko Brobbey said the government was meeting with striking union leaders to find common ground, even though it insists the government is committed to solving their problems.
However, negotiations collapsed when both sides showed no commitment to back down on their demands.
UTAG has so far not commented on the injunction obtained against his strike.
