According to new figures from the European statistical agency Eurostat, the Netherlands is lagging behind the rest of Europe in terms of meeting sustainable energy goals.
In 2017, only 6.6% of the energy used in the Netherlands came from sustainable sources, but the target is 14% by 2020, says Eurostat.
Luxembourg, where 6.4% of energy consumption derived from biofuels, hydropower or wind energy, solar energy or geothermal energy in 2017, has target of 11% for 2020.
Eurostat statistics show that 11 EU countries had already achieved their goals two years ago. In Sweden, for example, more than half of the energy is sustainable.
The EU as a whole wants to ensure that 20% of final gross energy consumption comes from renewable sources by 2020.
Carbon dioxide
The Netherlands is not only fighting for its green energy goals. The Dutch environmental badessment agency announced last month that the Netherlands would not achieve its target of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 25% by 2020 compared to 1990.
Instead, the reduction should not exceed 21%, the agency said.
