The new register of electors for the 2020 elections will be established by EC
The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it will soon establish a new register of voters for the 2020 general elections.
The decision to establish a new register of electors was made at the conclusion of a stakeholder meeting organized under the auspices of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on Wednesday, March 27, 2019.
In 2015, the Election Commission (EC) rejected the proposals for a new voter register, calling it an "unconvincing" appeal.
He concluded this after holding a forum following a heated national debate on the register after the opposition neo-patriotic (NPP) party at the time had claimed to have evidence suggesting that he had been compromised with 76,000 non-Ghanaian voters.
A number of demonstrations took place and some even became violent. A group of experts has been set up to gather stakeholder views on whether or not to create a new registry.
The late judge V.C.R.A.C. Crabbe was the panel chair and recommended that EC not replace the voters' register.
Stakeholders have now agreed that a new registry should be established.
They also agreed that the EC will hold the district level elections and referendum on the same day in the last quarter of 2019.
In a statement signed by the President of the EC, Jean Mensa, she explains in detail what the body will do before the general elections of 2020.
