Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu said the Eighth Parliament would not support the scrutiny and approval of ministers of state and their MPs exceeding 70 appointees.
The Tamale South MP said whoever is declared a “winner” of the Presidency should cut and significantly reduce the size of government to protect the public purse.
Speaking to Adom News on a number of issues, the Tamale South MP insisted that a country like Ghana should not have more than 120 ministers.
“I will not negotiate, whether majority or minority, with any president on the reduction of his government because it is a must.
“Parliament should not allow any president to appoint ministers and their deputies beyond 70. I want it to reflect that citizens want the preservation of public resources and their prudent use.
“You have to provide accommodation, security and vehicles, whether it’s four-wheelers or parlor cars, they all come at a price that can be used to take care of a pregnant woman and a child. sick child somewhere, ”he said.
Mr Iddrissu then asked, “Why should you have 120 ministers for a small country like Ghana?”
When appointing the next Speaker of the Eighth Legislature, the MP for Tamale South said the next Parliament needs a politically neutral speaker to oversee the business of the House.
“For the Speaker of Parliament, you will need someone who is above reproach, above partisanship, who knows the rules and who has an unprecedented commitment to the good of Ghana, and who would maintain the two sides of the house together for the good of Ghana and would not serve any parish interest, ”he said.
