PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla.
Health officials said the number of hepatitis A cases in a Florida county was increasing.
Health officials reported Friday that there had been 19 cases of hepatitis A in Martin County, with three deaths linked to complications of the virus.
The Florida Health Department considers a community as "high risk" when there are five or more confirmed cases.
Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection. It spreads when a person ingests the virus from objects, food or drink contaminated by the feces of an infected person.
The health agency announced that 1,200 cases of hepatitis A had been confirmed throughout the country.
The virus can be prevented through a vaccine and the Martin County Health Agency offered free vaccines to any uninsured or underinsured person.
