The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, says the government has not yet established the actual number of Ghanaians stranded in Libya.
She stated that the state is mobilizing all available resources in Valletta, Malta, Tripoli and Niamey. Speaking to Parliament, Ms Botchwey said the ministry was aware that there were Ghanaians stranded in Libya who contacted the consulate in Tripoli for help.
The Office of the International Organization for Migration in Accra is incompatible with that provided by the organization's office in Tripoli and Valletta.
Ms. Ayorkor Botchwey said that with the very unstable situation in Libya, it is difficult to obtain information on the actual number. She said the government would consider evacuating the 62,000 Ghanaians Libya.
Since June 2017, 706 Ghanaians in Libya have been helped to return home voluntarily.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Organization for Migration have also repatriated approximately 200 Ghanaians since April 2018.
The Ministry then opened consulates in Tripoli and Niamey to help Ghanaians who need.
