London Heathrow was Europe's first airport in 2018 with 80.12 million pbadengers, although Britain's planned withdrawal from the European Union poses a major risk to traffic.
The number of pbadengers using European airports set a record last year but growth has slowed compared to 2017, said Wednesday the Council of International Airports for Europe (ACI).
The total number of pbadengers at European airports reached 2.34 billion according to the group, which represents more than 500 airports in 45 countries.
Pbadenger numbers increased 6.1%, down from an 8.5% increase in 2017, according to a statement.
The five largest European airports added 16.5 million pbadengers, but were faced with "capacity limitations, increased hub competition, hub bypbad evolutions and airline strikes", said # 39; AIT.
"The management of this growth has been a real challenge and the pressure on the facilities and the staff of the airport is real.The capacity and the quality are now major problems for a growing number of airports", said ACI General Manager Olivier Jankovec.
London Heathrow was again the leading airport in Europe with 80.12 million pbadengers, followed by Paris-Charles de Gaulle with 72.22 million and Amsterdam-Schiphol with 71.05 million.
Frankfurt, number four with 69.51 million pbadengers, recorded the strongest growth among "majors" with an increase of 7.8%.
Freight traffic growth has stagnated in the meantime, recording a gain of only 1.8% after a leap of 8.4% in 2017, according to the data.
For the future, Jankovec has identified Britain's planned March 29 withdrawal from the European Union as "the main immediate risk", but said the measures announced by the European Commission should "help to mitigate the impact ".
