A warplane on Monday launched an airstrike against the only operational airport in the Libyan capital, local authorities said, as fighting raged for control of Tripoli.

A security source at Mitiga Airport, in the east of the city, said that no party had yet claimed responsibility for the raid, which hit a runway without doing of victims.

There have been fierce fighting near Tripoli since forces of strong military man Khalifa Haftar threw an badault Thursday to take the capital.

Libya, rich in oil, has been shaken by violent power struggles between various armed groups since the overthrow of dictator Muammar Gaddafi, backed by NATO, in 2011.

Haftar, a former Gaddafi military leader, has become a major player, his so-called Libyan national army supporting an administration in the east of the country opposed to the UN-backed Tripoli-based government.

The main airport of the capital was destroyed during the fighting in 2014.

Mitiga airport is located on a former military base in the eastern suburbs of the city. He was forced to close several times because of clashes between militias last year.
