The Sudanese military government announced the arrest of two brothers of ousted President Omar al-Bashir.

An army spokesman said it was part of a campaign to bring together the "symbols of the previous regime".

He added that irregular militias linked to the former ruling party had been placed under the control of the police or the army.

Earlier, military sources and relatives of Bashir had informed the BBC that the former president was himself in prison in Khartoum, the capital, six days after his overthrow.

Protesters say they will remain on the streets until the military generals now in charge hand over to a civilian-led administration.
