China's Internet technology company, Bytedance, has announced plans to establish local data centers in India. Bytedance is the company behind the popular social media platforms TikTok and Helo. The Indian government recently issued a notice regarding these applications for allegedly using the platforms for "anti-national activities". Applications have been warned that they could face a ban if they do not submit the appropriate responses 22 July.
"We are currently examining options for safe, reliable and secure services for our Indian users within Indian borders," Bytedance said in a press release.
This initiative would support the Indian government's efforts to localize user data collected in India by various companies. According to Business Standard, investment in local data centers will be part of the $ 1 billion investment in India announced by Bytedance earlier this year. The company "has an internal goal of 6 to 18 months" to set up the data centers, says the report.
The company also indicated that it currently stores Indian user data on third-party servers located in the United States and Singapore. The company had also said the same thing earlier this month when Congressman Shashi Tharoor accused it of illegally collecting user data and sending it to China.
"These claims are simply wrong. The privacy and security of our users is a top priority for TikTok, and we respect local laws and regulations in the markets in which we operate, "the company said in a statement.
Bytedance has also encountered problems in the country for allegedly promoting pronographic content on its platforms. TikTok was banned in April this year, following an order from the Madras Supreme Court, which however was lifted at the end of the month.
