More than nine out of 10 British universities pay their average male employee more than their average female employee.

Nearly all ministerial departments and nearly two-thirds of local councils also have pay gaps, according to data reported to the Office of Government Affairs.

Saturday is the last day for public sector organizations with more than 250 employees in Britain to publish their numbers.

Private sector companies still have a week until April 4th.

But with the deadline approaching, thousands of people still have to file, because many are waiting at the last moment. Last year, half of the companies said during the last week.

The public sector employs 5.3 million people, about one-sixth of the United Kingdom's workforce.

British universities report a higher median wage gap, averaging 13.7%, compared to the national average of 9.1% in 2018.

The pay gap between universities and men in 2017 was 15.3%.

The Association of University and College Employers (UCEA) said there had been a "marked narrowing of the gap over the past decade".

The largest of them is in the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS), where the difference is 22.9%.

The DCMS said it was determined to reduce its gender pay gap and take action accordingly.

"The pay gap between men and women in the public service continues to shrink and we will continue to work hard to balance wages at all levels of government," he added. .

One in three departments states that the pay gap has actually widened compared to last year.

The average pay gap in local governments is 3.7%. The council of Tonbridge and Malling reports the largest pay gap for men, 32.7%, followed by Babergh with 27.8% and Dartford with 27.5%.

At the same time, 78 councils reported paying women more than men. The Three Rivers Council in Hertfordshire has a 50% pay gap for women.

The gender pay gap does not mean that women are paid less than men for the same job, which has been illegal since 1970.

However, the pay gap reflects the differences in work patterns between men and women, with part-time roles being predominantly women and a lack of women in management positions.

Median wage gap

The median pay gap is the difference in pay between the middle-ranked and the average-rank man.

The average pay gap is the difference between the total salary expenses per woman of a company and its total expenses per man.

Unequal pay gives women less than men for the same job. This is contrary to the law since the introduction of the Equal Pay Act in 1970.

How does the BBC calculator work?

Data for sole proprietorships reflect information provided by companies to the Government Office for Equality as of March 29th.

The data submitted each year are based on figures taken from a specific date – called "snapshot date" – the previous year. For businesses and charities, the date of the snapshot is April 5, while March 31 is the snapshot date for public sector organizations.
