Budu Koomson Captain Budu Koomson

Captain Budu Koomson, a retired officer, blamed the recent badbadinations in the country on the proliferation of illicit small arms.

The inability of responsible agencies to crack the bad on the production of these weapons and to prevent their smuggling into the country, he added, allows people to easily acquire these weapons to kill them and shoot them down.

His remarks come after the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale, shot three times near Madina's home in Accra.

Speaking Saturday on the key points of TV3, he said that, given the nature of the work of the deceased, strict security measures should have been put in place to protect him.

"With the kind of work they do, are they safer, do people have their backs?

"It makes them realize that, given my job, I have to take appropriate personal safety measures," said Lieutenant Commander Koomson.

The badbadination of Ahmed is not an isolated case this year. Since the beginning of this year, two more people have been shot dead.

An engineer from the Ghana Water Company Limited, Joseph Migal Jinjer, was shot dead on New Year's Eve while he was with his family.

The Public Affairs Officer of Ghana's Ports and Habits Authority, Ms. Josephine Asante, who was killed at her home is believed to have been shot dead.

Last December, Nene Atsure Benta III, leader of the traditional Prampram area clan, was shot dead by unknown badailants in Apollonia, Kpone-Katamanso municipality.

These badbadinations, which many suspect are custom killings, have raised concerns about the country's security. Some people, including Amnesty International, said that the situation could potentially plunge Ghanaians into a state of fear, insecurity and concern.

Captain Retd Koomson therefore stressed the need to pay greater attention to the proliferation of small arms in the country.

"… We are losing sight of the very serious threats that we are not answering, and this is the proliferation of illicit small arms."

He pointed out that, as Ghana is renowned for being peaceful and liberal, some people take advantage of this liberalism to enter the country with all kinds of weapons and ammunition.

It therefore asks agencies and relevant authorities to ensure that the proliferation of weapons and their production in the country is properly controlled to prevent incidents such as recent killings.

"There should be a concerted effort to make people fear that we can come after you or make a deliberate effort to fix the problem," he said.

According to Captain Retd Koomson, next to the proliferation of weapons, it is also possible that people are now reckless with these murders, because they have the impression that these problems are not resolved quickly enough.

This, he observed, seems to have encouraged people to commit such crimes because they feel that they could easily get away with it.

It has therefore instructed the security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of such crimes are brought to justice within a reasonable time.
