British Prime Minister Theresa May retires Friday as head of the Conservatives, while several of his party colleagues are fighting for the post of prime minister.
May failed to deliver the Brexit to the British people during her three years in power and, although she remains Prime Minister until the appointment of a new leader, she yielded the control of the Brexit portfolio.
No official event is scheduled to mark his departure. May should resign from his leadership in a letter to his party.
His departure comes as a result of a state visit by US President Donald Trump and his birthday celebrations highlighting the 75th anniversary of D-Day landings in Normandy.
Following the 2016 vote to leave the European Union, Brexit was delayed twice, while May was fighting for its withdrawal agreement to be approved by Parliament.
Monday marks the deadline for appointments to replace her, former Foreign Minister Boris Johnson being considered the favorite of the 11 or so legislators who have shown interest.
A new conservative leader will probably be chosen in late July. Britain will leave the EU three months later, on 31 October.
