The ring of Princess Diana belonged to Prince Harry

After the death of their mother, Princess Diana in 1997, her sons, Princes William and Harry, went to Kensington Palace to choose a "souvenir," according to Reader's Digest.

Prince Harry, who was 12 at the time, chose his mother's sapphire and diamond engagement ring. And his older brother, 15-year-old Prince William, chose his mother's Cartier watch.

How did Prince William end up with his mother's engagement ring?

In 2010, when Prince William proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Kate Middleton, he asked the question with his mother's engagement ring. How did it happen? Prince Harry offered the ring to his big brother.

"They had agreed that whoever would get engaged first would have Diana's ring," said a source, according to Reader's Digest. Thus, Prince Harry, who had been in possession of the engagement ring for 13 years, gave it to his brother, while Prince William chose the Cartier watch and not the ring.

How did Prince William propose?

Prince William proposed to his university girlfriend in the fall of 2010. The future head of the British monarchy raised the issue in Kenya, where he and Middleton stayed in a secluded log cabin.

"It's very special for me," he added. "Since Kate is so special to me now, it was just a combination of both."

Although Prince Harry did not ask Markle to wear his mother's engagement ring, he still made sure that his mother was part of the proposal.

"The ring is obviously in yellow gold because it's [Meghan’s] favorite and the main stone itself I come from Botswana and the little diamonds on each side are from [Princess Diana’s] jewelry collection, to make sure she's with us on this crazy journey together, "Prince Harry said during the interview.
