CAIRO (REUTERS) – California-based Red Hot Chili Peppers played on Friday, March 15 in front of Egypt's Great Pyramids of Giza, entertaining more than 10,000 people on the site and much more on a live link.

With the three ancient monuments standing out behind the scenes, the funk-rock band started with Can not Stop and followed with Californication, Dark Necessities and other successes.

The concert, which took place under strict security conditions, was promoted by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism, which attempts to put the country back on the map as a destination of choice after the uprising of 2011 and the years subsequent troubles frightened many visitors.

"It took a lot of work but it was well worth it," said Christina Robertson, a Madison, Wisconsin fan, who left five children at home to make the trip.

"I've always wanted to come to Egypt, I've always wanted to see the pyramids, it's spectacular, it's a dream, and see Red Hot Chili Peppers here, my favorite band of all the time."

Singer Anthony Kiedis, bbadist Michael "Flea" Balzary and drummer Chad Smith join bands such as The Grateful Dead, Scorpions and Frank Sinatra in one of the seven wonders of the world.

This concert is the first international concert to be held on the ancient site since the pianist Yanni in 2015.

Fans have traveled from 67 countries, said concert organizer Karim El Chiaty.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold more than 60 million albums, won six Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

The band is currently on a world tour and is working on completing its 12th album after the 2016 release of The Getaway.
