The Right Reverend John Bonaventure Kwofie, Metropolitan Catholic Archbishop of Accra, says the resurrection of Jesus Christ freed mankind from the slavery of sin and death.
As Christians around the world celebrate Easter with joy and triumph, he says, Jesus emerged victorious, freed humans from the bondage of sin and death, and made them into a new creation.
Easter, he explained, was a feast of new life and a great relationship with Christ.
Archbishop Kwofie made the remark while delivering the homily on Sunday at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Adabraka, when the cathedral joined with the rest of the Christians in celebrating the resurrection of Christ.
The Bible verses for the homily were Acts 10:24, 37-43, with Psalm 118: 1-2, 16-17, 22-23 as the responsorial psalm, followed by Colossians 3: 1-4 and John 20: 1- 9 as readings of the second and the Gospel respectively.
The Archbishop said that the First Reading reminded Christians that together with the Apostles of Christ they were witnesses to the Lord, while the Second Reading called on Christians to place their affection on things above and not on the ground.
Regarding the gospel reading, he said that sometimes humans do not understand God’s plan in their lives and the difficult times they are going through.
“Sometimes we fail to understand the empty tomb and the loss in our lives, but it could be the start of significant growth. We are suffering from difficulties just to face and wait for the opportunity to finally step away from our crosses, ”he said.
“How can we recognize the glory of God when we are depressed and how can we achieve our victory when we curse our crosses. It’s impossible, ”said Bishop Kwofie.
He advised Christians to learn to see the resurrection of Christ as relief from their problems and to be patient to be surprised by God.
While interspersing it with the hymn “Hear our prayers, Lord”, the Congregation prayed for the clergy that God fill them with the spirit of sacrifice and the virtue of holiness, and that Ghana and its citizens may be faithful to the ideals of freedom and justice, while living lives of virtue.
They also prayed that the Church would live in unity and in love with one another, and that the poor, the sick and the needy whom God would reach out to them and provide for them according to their needs.
Those suffering from the endless effects of COVID-19, and the souls of all the deceased and dead faithful have been prayed that God will grant them healing and eternal rest by tempering justice with mercy.
The celebration was adorned with the 200 hymn “(I know my Redeemer lives”, “Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world”, and other gospel songs of worship songs like “He is Lord, he rose from the dead ”,“ Yen Agya Christ, Wadi Nkunim ”and reached its climax with the“ Halleluiah Chorus ”.
