Guinea Conakry, one of the West African countries of just over 13 million inhabitants that has suffered numerous coups d’état over the years, has just suffered another on 5 September 2021 led by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, a commander of the Special Forces of the Army created by President Alpha Condé to fight terrorism.
But some sources claim that Alpha Conde created the army’s special forces unit for his personal protection as he sought to win a third term which he ultimately won anyway by amending the constitution to allow him to run for two additional terms because he had already been president. for two terms from 2010 to 2020 …
I think the biggest mistake in Alpha Condé’s life was his decision to change his country’s constitution in order to run for a third term, which ultimately brought him shame and humiliation.
People who say they don’t support any coup, no matter what should be sincere with themselves. How can the Guinean people sit back and watch an elected president turn into a dictator, change the constitution to rule forever, and remove or kill the people who protest against this act and yet you say the people of the country should not not neutralize this tyrannical regime by what does it mean, including a coup? Are not the military also part of the people and do they not have a say in what is happening in the country?
The African Union and the Economic Community of West African States often stand on the sidelines or do nothing when elected presidents on the continent abandon their country’s constitutions and manipulate the system for personal gain . However, the two associations cry foul when there are military takeovers.
Isn’t it obvious that corrupt leaders in Africa support each other? The democracy they claim to practice is a manipulated democracy. They use democracy to gain power, then amend their constitutions to perpetuate themselves in power forever.
If they had any integrity, they should be on the necks of sit-tighters like Uganda’s Museveni and heckle them from power. Unfortunately, they instead tell Colonel Doumbouya the new head of state to return power to Alpha Condé who went against the constitution of his country.
Democracy must operate under strict and uncompromising rules and the drive to conduct free and fair elections must be paramount and presidents must have this discipline to hand over power peacefully whenever their term ends.
Without these principles or precepts, you create autocrats and dictators who will use power for their personal gain. Guineans should seize this opportunity to create the right structures and build what works for their own benefit.
I see Colonel Mamady Doumbouya as a young man who wants to have a positive impact on his generation given the reasons for his takeover, but my only fear is, him, to emulate later bad African leaders just like the one who ‘he just spilled.
Because some of these strong men like Museveni came all over the place with just and burning anger and idealistic plans to make the world a better place, but when they settled down they became the very thing they fought against. . It has been a scourge of African leadership on the continent.
But once Colonel Mamady Doumbouya has not spilled blood and plundered public funds, but created working structures that will bring the country back to true civilian rule, he will remain one of Africa’s heroes, all like the great captain Thomas Sankara of Burkina Faso. Let him not be misled by ECOWAS and other corrupt entities.
So far, everything is fine, considering the steps he has taken to normalize things in the country. He is also sworn in as interim president as they rewrite the constitution and hand power over to a full civilian government …
