Veteran Jason Salo and his 11-year-old son, Cohen, are now building a model for the national launch of Op VetBuild of the Royal Canadian Legion in Ajax, Ontario.

OTTAWA, June 16, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Active and retired veterans participated in the national launch of the new Operation VetBuild program in Ajax, ON today. The program uses model building kits in a favorable atmosphere. Working in a stress-free environment with other veterans is a chance to learn new skills and relax.

The transition to life after mission is one of the key areas of intervention for the Legion, including helping to address issues such as mental health issues that may arise from military life.
Jason Salo, a retired reservist and a military policeman, declares Operation VetBuild gives him the opportunity to meet other veterans with similar backgrounds.
"I lacked the fellowship of getting together and chatting," says Jason. "It's interesting to sit around the table with different generations of veterans and hear the same stories from everyone," he said. Attending the sessions with his 11-year-old son, Cohen, also added another dimension to his experience, he adds. They have the opportunity to participate together in a fun activity, which allows their son to learn directly from other veterans of the challenges they face.
An idea from the Legion Special Section for Operational Stress Injuries (OSI Legion OSI), feedback from the program's pilot projects has been extremely positive. He urged the ongoing development of a large-scale initiative, says Craig Hood, Operation VetBuild Program Manager and President, BSO Legion OSI.
"We know that this type of activity can be very therapeutic," he says. "We plan to expand our business to include as many branches as possible across the country, to give as many veterans as possible the opportunity to participate in this fun activity."
The first of its kind in Canada, Operation VetBuild result from similar successful initiatives in Britain and the United States. Upcoming sessions at Legion branches across the country this year include Ontario (Ajax, Angus, Flesherton, Hamilton Mountain), Alberta (Edmonton), Quebec (Lacolle) and British Columbia (Agbadiz). Other places will be announced in the coming weeks. .
