The science of why you become addicted

For the uninitiated, suspend it (it is the fusion of hunger and anger), that is to say when the empty stomach flattens your cool, often provoking irritability, mood swings and involuntary cries to your spouse.

You can largely blame a low blood sugar level to this deplorable state of mind, says registered dietitian Whitney Bevins. It's a stress response, she says. Glucose is your favorite fuel of the brain. When your brain senses that glucose stores are depleting, you start sneaking.

That's why a snack instantly heals the problem (though your wedding may be more difficult to repair). Eating food starts the process of restoring glucose in your body.

Daily hangers could mean that you have a metabolic problem, she says. Your body should not have a lot of trouble providing energy to your brain.

If you suffer from recurring problems, your brain may actually be suffering from sugar addiction, says Shanahan. (Answer this quiz to find out if you are addicted to sugar.) The more simple carbohydrates (sugar, processed cereal products) you consume, the more your body uses them as fuel.

But your body should use a variety of fuels for optimum efficiency, says Shanahan. The proverb "You rest, you rust" applies to almost every aspect of your metabolism understood, she says.

Shanahan advocates limiting carbs from time to time to encourage fat adaptation, or fat metabolism. The more fat you need to refuel, the more your body starts producing the enzymes needed to break down fat, she says. Over time, the process of using fat becomes easier. A good place to start: breakfast. Eating a bowl of Lucky Charms or tearing a roll of cinnamon, is like maintaining pure glucose. Even worse, it prepares you for a day of carbohydrate addiction. Swap the sweetened cereals for scrambled eggs with vegetables and you'll start your day by burning fat and protein first, and then dramatically reducing the risk of suspension.

And minimize sugary snacks throughout the day. Instead, try peanut butter and banana, or cheese and cracker options that contain carbohydrates but also contain fats and proteins, which slows down digestion and helps keep blood sugar levels stable.

Finally, Bevins says that one of the keys to addressing is learning to understand when you are legitimately angry and when your brain makes you feel angry. If your stormy mood could be this, resist the urge to bite your spouse's head. Instead, reserve this bite for a bit of dried beef.
