A Fisheries and Oceans expert said fishermen in coastal towns, where several species of fish and dolphins were stranded over the weekend, are free to practice their trade.
Professor Francis Nunoo, senior lecturer in the Department of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at the University of Ghana, said the sea is not only huge, but also has a natural tendency to cleanse itself.
“The shedding of fish has stopped for now. We will say that the sea is fine. So there is whole fish there, fishermen can go fishing. But they should catch healthy fish, ”he said.
Prof Nunoo explained that fishermen can look for telltale signs that could help them determine if the fish caught is safe for consumption.
He said that for fresh fish “the gills are red and fresh. But if the gills have a certain odor, as well as spots, or if they are not as red as they should be, ”then they are not sure.
His comment comes after some fish were spotted dead along some coastal areas, including Osu in the Greater Accra region.
After a day, about sixty dead dolphins were seen on the shores of Axim-Bewire in the municipality of Nzema East of the western region.
The Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly after the incident warned the general public against consuming fish washed up on the shores while investigations were underway to determine the cause.
Meanwhile, Professor Nunoo said he hoped the country would get answers on what happened at the end of the day on Tuesday April 6.
“My department collaborates with IESS (Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies) at the same university, we took samples and from now on, we are in the laboratory to examine them.
“The Fisheries Commission has taken samples, the FDA and others have all taken samples, and various labs are really working on site,” he said.
Professor Nunoo, however, urged the general public not to buy fish at cheap prices due to fears that some people may have taken some of the fish.
“We all know the normal average prices for fish. So if you see someone selling a huge, high quality fish for a really low price, you have to question them. Cheap fish is dangerous. Please don’t buy cheap fish, ”he said.
