The pre-production of the sequel to Paramount's "World War Z" was stopped, sources said. Variety, after a budget for the film could not be reached.
Brad Pitt was about to come back and David Fincher, his director of "Seven" and "Fight Club", was in charge. Producers said Variety that the goal was to start production by this summer and that the process was still in its infancy, the studio had begun to look to complete the whole.
Paramount had no comments on the news.
The sources could not confirm the exact nature of the budget problems, apart from the fact that the studio was less and less comfortable with the direction that it takes. The previous film had similar production budget issues, with Damon Lindelof known for his last-minute rewrite of the third act as the budget continued to rise. This film was able to survive production problems and reach 540 million dollars worldwide, but even if it worked, the studio did not want to see a similar situation afterwards.
It is currently unclear whether this film will revert to development or be completely sidelined, as the studio is trying to determine if the next move is possible with the appropriate budget.
