Bill Gates Four Reading Rules
To make sure he gets the most out of what he reads, Bill Gates follows four reading rules.
1. It takes notes in the margins
You know, when you read, you have to make sure that you really focus. – Bill Gates.
Taking notes helps to understand the author's point of view and to make sure that he thinks critically about it.
2. He finishes what he started
He tries to avoid starting a book that he does not intend to finish. This helps to avoid missing important points that the author tries to make.
3. He prefers to print on digital
Over time, I will make the change [from print to digital]. But when I sit at night reading, often the paper magazine or the book, I'm used to it. – Bill Gates
He likes to read at the old, because he takes a lot of notes in the margins. He even takes a canvas tote bag full of books on vacation and reads them late.
4. It blocks at least an hour a day
This is not the kind of thing you can do five minutes here, ten minutes there. Magazine articles or short YouTube videos go into these little slot machines. – Bill Gates
He suggests that you spend at least an hour a day reading seriously. He thinks it takes at least an hour to be able to think about what you read instead of just using words.
