During his recent stop at Comic-Con San Diego, Groening explained how using the team's resources through the film could have allowed the sitcom to collapse.
Via NME, he revealed: "This is a real answer. Simpsons movie almost killed us.
"We did not have a B team waiting to do The Simpson movie, so the same people who wrote, animated, expressed and made music for The simpsons TV show also made the movie. "
He then joked: "It was in 2007. We almost recovered, almost."
