Defense Minister Dominic Nitiwul unveiled the statue of Major Mahama, the soldier killed by the residents of Diaso in the central Denkyira district.

The ceremony was to mark two years since the badbadination of the soldier in Denkyira Obuasi.

Major Mahama, commander of the military detachment stationed in Diaso, was killed unexpectedly on May 29, 2017 after being lynched by locals who claimed he was an armed robber.

The construction of a 20-foot monument in honor of the end of the weld at the Airport Hills roundabout had aroused strong opposition from a group of La residents who have stated that they saw no reason for the monument to be on their property when the deceased officer was killed.

In unveiling the statue, Nitiwul called on Ghanaians to learn from the killing and avoid the practice of instant justice.

He added that Major Mahama should be the last victim of popular justice.

In addition to the statue, a trust fund was established by the government to badist Major Mahama's wife and children.

President Nana Akufo-Addo also made a personal donation of 50,000 GH ¢ to the fund.

The monument responds to a request from the family of the deceased military officer.

Major Mahama's family made the request public during a courtesy call to the president in 2017, where she expressed hope that the monument would serve as a reminder of the tragedy and deter the chanting of the people's justice in Ghana.

An official police report says that he went jogging on the Diaso-Dominase-Ayanfu stretch when a crowd attacked him while he was suspected of being an armed robber.
