The chairman of the Sudanese military council resigned one day after the overthrow of President Omar al Bashir.

Minister of National Defense Awad Ibn Auf announced his decision during a Friday TV show on public television.

He named his successor Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan.

She intervenes after protesters refused to leave the streets, claiming that those responsible for the coup were too close to Bashir.

The army insisted that it was not seeking power and that the future of Sudan would be decided by the protesters.

Ibn Auf was the head of military intelligence during the Darfur conflict. Mr. Bashir has been indicted for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for this conflict.

The fall of Mr Bashir took place after months of unrest that began in December because of rising prices. At least 38 people died during the demonstrations.
