The suspects behind Macron’s QR data leak “identified”

French authorities have identified health workers suspected of having disclosed the vaccination status and personal data of President Emmanuel Macron.

Details of Macron’s “health pass” – a QR code that serves as proof of vaccination or immunity and allows access to cafes and cultural life – had recently been shared on social media.

The pass also showed the president’s full name and date of birth.

The data breach came after a similar incident happened to Prime Minister Jean Castex earlier this month, despite his pass being tricked through various means.

The CNAM said healthcare professionals who abused their access to Macron’s contact details had been “identified” and would now be referred to their oversight body for possible sanctions.

Neglect of malice?

A presidential official who asked not to be named confirmed the authenticity of the health pass, saying medical professionals had viewed the president’s vaccine record and released the data “negligently or maliciously.”

All health professionals have access to the centralized computer system set up as part of the vaccination campaign, the official said.

Castex’s QR code was shared on social media last week after internet users managed to scan it from a press photo where the prime minister was seen presenting his health passport.

Macron and Castex have since received new QR codes.

The presidential spokesman said that any citizen whose health passport was disclosed in this way could obtain a new one.

On July 21, France made the health passport compulsory for access to cafes, restaurants and other services, on Macron’s order.

Despite weeks of protests from opponents who see it as a violation of civil liberties, the laissez-passer is widely regarded as a success, becoming an accepted part of daily routine and helping to increase the number of early biters in France to more than 50 million.
