A new alcoholic drink is being developed. It will give drinkers the same enthusiasm as regular alcoholic drinks without the unhealthy hangover.
Professor David Nutt, director of the Neuropsychopharmacology Unit at Imperial College London, is leading the creation of a synthetic alternative to mainstream alcoholic beverages.
The new drink, known as Alcarelle, promises to impart the same warm and relaxing benefits of beer without causing the nauseating effects of a hangover. If Alcarelle became available on the market, Nutt thought that this could change the number of people consuming alcohol.
Alcarelle Synthetic Alcohol
In the UK, Nutt's has long been renowned for his fierce opposition to alcoholism. It was even once claimed that drinking alcohol was more dangerous than consuming psychedelic drugs such as LSD and ecstasy.
His controversial belief may have cost him his position as chief advisor to the UK government on drugs, but that does not stop him from looking for a reliable alternative to alcohol.
The professor's research led him to develop Alcarelle, a kind of miracle drink capable of triggering the same human disaster as alcoholic beverages. The secret lies in its use of molecules called "alcosynth".
In an interview with The Guardian, Nutt recounted how the idea behind Alcarelle came to him after finding an "antidote" to alcohol. He said it was at that time that he was still working on his doctorate. in 1983.
"I was studying the effects of alcohol on the Gaba system," Nutt said.
The antidote developed by the professor was too dangerous to be used for clinical purposes. If the drug were to be taken while sober, it would cause a person with seizures similar to severe alcohol withdrawal.
When Nutt realized this, he instead devoted his studies to Gaba receptors and their reaction in case of exposure to alcoholic substances.
Alcosynth Molecules
It has been shown that Alcosynth causes discomfort by targeting certain Gaba receptors while avoiding those that could trigger negative side effects such as a hangover.
Nutt said that they had identified parts of the brain that reacted positively and negatively to alcohol. They also found a way to help mitigate these impacts by activating specific receptors such as Gaba and Glutamate.
"The effects of alcohol are complicated but … you can target the parts of the brain that you want to target," noted the researcher.
Alcarelle can be modified to produce the desired results. For example, a drinker may have the same level of pleasure as drinking a few cans of beer but not getting drunk.
Nutt and his colleagues are the only ones who have tried to drink synthetic alcohol until now, because the drink has yet to pbad the safety tests.
In addition to offering Alcarelle as an alternative to alcohol, researchers are also considering using the same concept for food ingredients. They collaborate with food scientists to develop a five-year strategy in which alcosynth can be used as a food additive.
To achieve this, Nutt said they had to prove that the regulated molecules would produce no toxicity similar to that of alcohol. They must also show that alcosynth, as an ingredient, will not trigger the same harmful effects as alcohol.
If Nutt's miracle drink turns out to be effective, it could help mitigate the pervasive negative effects of alcoholism. In the UK alone, more than one in 10 British over the age of 40 dies of liver disease resulting from its consumption of alcohol.
