The ten countries with the largest production of fossil fuels

[ad_1]

Despite the rapid growth of renewable energy over the last decade, fossil fuels continue to dominate global energy consumption. According to BP's recent World Energy Statistical Report 2019, fossil fuels accounted for 84.7% of global energy consumption in 2018.

A few weeks ago, I received a press kit on this topic. I usually get several weekly, most of which are not relevant enough to be shared with readers. I thought this one was.

A company called 911 Metallurgist has collected data from more than a dozen sources to create animated maps showing the countries that currently produce the most oil, coal and natural gas.

The graphics are consistent with those from my recent Review series, but they give more detail by listing the top 10 in each category, as well as overall fossil fuel production. By expanding the ranking, surprises were revealed in each category. (All graphics are used with permission).

Oil

Total production of oil.

The United States was the world's largest oil producer, which is consistent with my recent article detailing the findings of the Review of World Oil Production and Consumption. The biggest surprise for some may be that China is among the top 5 oil producers in the world, ahead of all countries in the Middle East, with the exception of Saudi Arabia.

Natural gas

Total production of natural gas.

The United States was also in first place here, according to my previous report. Canada, China and Norway were among the top 10 countries.

Coal

Total production of coal.

China is by far the world's largest coal producer, with 46% of the world total in 2018. I think the biggest surprise of the Top 10 is the presence of Germany, which is widely regarded as the only one in the world. one of the greenest countries in the world. .

Total production of fossil fuels

Total production of fossil fuels.

Given its leading position in oil and natural gas production, it is no surprise that the United States took first place overall. Russia in second place is not a surprise, but Iran in third place will be a surprise to many.

It may also be surprising that more countries in the Middle East are not in the top 10, but countries like Canada, China, Norway and Australia are all in the top 10. Norway is perhaps the biggest surprise because it has the Top 10 in a category, ranking 7th in the production of natural gas.
