The Tema Traditional Council on Wednesday called on the government not to appoint a non-native to the post of Tema MCE.

Council members who made the appeal at a press conference said it was time for traditional consideration to be given priority in MCE’s appointment for Tema.

Nii Amarh Sompuno II, spokesperson for the Council and Tema Shipi, said it was sad that despite losing their occupation by ceding their land, the government is also determined to give the post of MCE to a non-native.

He said that although Tema West and Ashaiman were also under his primacy, non-natives were MCEs in both regions, so it was not out of place for them to insist on at least getting one for the metropolis of Tema where the Council was. .

According to him, Tema can also boast of having natives with a good level of education who were also activists of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) so there was no justification to bypass these people for another tribe take the head of the TMA.

Giving a brief history of Tema, he said in 1952, the government acquired around 32 square miles of his land, causing them to lose their ancestral home and farmland, a situation which led them to relocate to Tema Newtown. and lose their livelihoods.

He added that the government then ceded most of their land to industries without anticipating its effect on their occupation, these lands, he said, were given to the Ghana Ports and Harbor Authority, TDC Development Company Limited. , part of which was used for their resettlement.

According to him, part of the land given to them for resettlement was also used for the construction of the East Naval Base and the West African Gas Pipeline without any form of replacement.

He said all industries on their land often import labor from other parts of the country whenever there is recruitment, for example saying that recently when GPHA recruited around 380 workers for its security and fire services, the council received only two slots for teeming unemployed youth.
