The Tumu Municipal Hospital has seen an increase in cases of blood pressure and
diabetes over the past three years, which health officials attribute to growth
sedentary lifestyle among the population.

Diabetes cases began to increase from 2016
with 37 reports, according to hospital staff, but the figure has increased, more
to double to 79 in 2017 and 103 in 2018.

The cases of hypertension reported in 2016 at
the health facility was set at 490 but increased by more than 100% to 1,259 in
2017 and climbed to 1,892 in 2018.

S addressing the Ghana News Agency in Tumu, the
Mr. Alex Bapula, Director of Health of the Municipality of East Sissala, is concerned about the
growing cases of hypertension and diabetes and called on the public to be
cautious of their way of life.

He blamed the upsurge of risk factors such as
smoking, lack of exercise, increasing consumption of fast foods and
increased consumption of alcohol and sugary foods, especially among young people.

The worrisome health situation has led to
many cases, where people die within a few days of the diagnosis of
stroke and diabetes, he said.

Mr. Bapula urged the workers involved in the work
fewer movements or activities to be exercised more regularly, for example in
walk a few kilometers or reduce the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

As part of the measures to help contain the
situation and achieve a universal health system, the health directorate will prepare
Public education targeting youth camps in Tumu City.

A diabetic clinic was also established at
the hospital to quickly diagnose and treat reported cases.

Public and private sector workers have been
advised to always take a short break during working hours and to do at least
3 minutes walk or stretch.
