Accra Tema Railway The call precedes the May Day celebrations

The Ghana Railway Workers' Union asks management to review the salary structure of its members.

The call precedes the workers' day celebrations on May 1.

Workers told Citi Business News that their constant calls did not yield positive results as management did not respond to their call.

Among other things, the railways union wants management to accept them by increasing their wages.

Godwill Ntarmah, secretary general of the union, said the workers are asking for it because their salary has not been reviewed since July 2018.

"We had a collective agreement that expired in July 2018. Since that day, we have tried several times to negotiate an upward salary review, but we have failed. We therefore ask the management of the company to take care to avoid this long delay, "he said.

In addition, Ntarmah said the government should do its best to complete the contract award for the reorganization of the Western rail line.

He said redeveloping it would create jobs for young people, reduce the carnage on the roads caused by larger trucks and longer roadways in the western region.

"What will support us more is the reorganization of the West rail line. This line is where we have bauxite, manganese, cocoa among others. We think that in the context of the redesign of this line, if it is not totally redeveloped, we may not be able to support this railway company, "he warned.

The celebration of May 1st of this year, also known as Workers' Day, focuses on the theme "Sustainable Pension; the role of the social partners ".
