Minister of State for Higher Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah
The transformation of the Wa Campus from the University of Development Studies into a full-fledged university will attract the development of the Upper West region, said the State Minister in charge of of Higher Education, Kwesi Yankah.
Presenting a motion for the conversion of the UDS Wa campus into an autonomous university known as the University of Business Studies and Integral Development in Parliament on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, Professor Yankah pointed out that the region of the UDS 39 Upper West was one of the poorest regions of the country.
Therefore, with the establishment of a complete university in this part of the country, businesses and other activities related to the economy will be attracted to this region.
He also told Parliament that the university was part of the government's policy of having a public university in all parts of Ghana.
"This is in line with the government's policy of creating a publicly funded university in every region of the country," he said.
He added: "Faculty Development Studies, Faculty of Planning and Management, Business School and Faculty of Education; these programs will form the core of the new university.
"The transformation of the Wa campus into a full-fledged university was recommended because the Upper West region is the poorest in the country. The region must be developed with resources.
"Wa's campus is also far from Tamale. The upgrade provides local residents with access to higher education for national development and to improve the lives of local residents. "
