Bloom was seriously injured afterwards. She suffered a broken skull, a bruised and bleeding brain, ruptured lungs and two spinal injuries with long-term consequences. Her spine was broken at the T6 and T7 vertebrae, leaving her paralyzed from the chest down. “Fortunately, I have absolutely no recollection of this horror,” Bloom wrote.
Once a surf enthusiast and adventurer, Bloom was now confined to a wheelchair. Suddenly Bloom wrote for Time, she felt like a stranger in her own life. “Our house was not as I remembered it, and in my mind it was no longer my house. It was not the precious nest I had made for my three babies. Seen from a wheelchair, the once familiar sanctuary of love and comfort has become an alien landscape strewn with obstacles. Nothing seemed right; I no longer felt like I belonged, ”she wrote.
Here is where the title of the movie, Penguin Bloom, Between. As Bloom struggled to adjust to the new normal, his son Noah took in an injured magpie chick he named Penguin for its black and white coloring. Magpies, by British, are considered one of the smartest animals around – and are also prone to aggressively attack humans. Speaking to NPR, Watts revealed that she had previously been attacked by an “entire herd” of magpies.
But Penguin the Magpie has wreaked havoc on the Bloom family the opposite. By taking care of the baby bird and watching it grow, the family bonded and Bloom found a new purpose. Eventually, Cameron recorded the family’s experiences in the book Penguin Bloom: the strange little bird who saved a family, co-written with Bradley Trevor Greive.
Watts read the book and found it deeply moving. “I read it on a Sunday morning with my kids in bed, flipping through the pages and being completely drawn to these beautiful pictures of this creature, this tiny little bird. I just felt really drawn to this moment and saw the magic of this bird creating unity and healing of hope, ”she said. The Hollywood Reporter.

She placed 13e in the world and won two Australian titles before representing his country at the 2015 World Championships in Italy. As a member of the Australian Adaptive Surf Team, she won gold for Australia at the 2019 and 2020 World Para-Surfing Championships. “Coming back to surfing has been a game-changer for me.
